of Primary Function/General Purpose of PositionThe Lactation
Consultant is responsible for providing professional guidance and
optimum assistance to breastfeeding families to attain a
satisfactory nursing relationship and achieve family's goal for
breastfeeding success.Essential Job Functions--- Assesses, plans,
provides, and evaluates need for breastfeeding support, education,
and professional nursing care.--- Collects, interprets, and applies
data collected from breastfeeding patient to provide appropriate
interventions to meet patient's needs.--- Identifies and intervenes
to address patient and family need for lactation support and
educational needs.--- Acts as the leader and mentors other team
members in lactation.--- Assists in the efficient operation of
unit.--- Works toward the improvement of lactation services through
continuing educational offers to the staff of Perinatal
services.--- Participates in the unit-based Performance Improvement
program and adheres to required patient care standards for the
assigned area.--- May be requested to provide community lactation
education to patients and support systems.This document is not an

Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) Certification (required
within 14 months of hire and must be maintained)Current RN license
in state they are working or covered by compact
(preferred)EducationAssociates or Bachelors in a healthcare related
field (preferred)Bachelors of Science Nursing (preferred)Work
Experience1 year of hospital experience working with postpartum
breastfeeding mothers (preferred)Previous experience counseling
postpartum families in breastfeeding (preferred)TrainingEPIC
Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (required)Skills---
Orients, facilitates learning experience, and provides education
(based upon quality improvement indicators, outcomes, and
implementation) to nursing staff and others.--- Possesses clinical
knowledge, skills, and competency to provide evidence-based patient
care in accordance with the current standards of practice, policy
and procedure, and BSMH mission.--- Performs comprehensive
assessment of patient's clinical condition and psychosocial needs
of the patient and their supportive resources.--- Safely and
efficiently develops, implements, and prioritizes plan of care.---
Assesses patient's physical and emotional responses and revises
plan of care accordingly.--- Collaborates with others in the
delivery of coordinated patient care.--- Strong interpersonal and
verbal/written communication skills.--- Applies cultural diversity
and inclusion principles when caring for patients and their support
resources.--- Advances personal and professional growth through
participation in educational programs, current literature,
in-services, and workshops.--- Exhibits professionalism through
accountability for own and delegated actions.--- Integrates
