Description: Unit consists of 48 beds. Nurse to patient ratios are
1:5-7 on day shifts and 1:6-8 on night shifts. Common patient
diagnoses include pneumonia, urinary tract infections, altered
mental status, gastrointestinal bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and
weakness from falls. Nurses are required to titrate medications,
with exceptions for cardiac drips. Common titratable and set rate
drips include heparin, bumex, and lasix. There are two charge
nurses on the day shift who will take patient assignments. At
night, if only one charge nurse is scheduled, they will not take a
patient assignment. Patient care techs assist on the unit with an
approximate ratio of 1:10-12. Responsibilities of the patient care
techs include monitoring vitals, glucose monitoring, conducting
EKGs, applying heart monitors, personal hygiene tasks, feeding,
toileting, and patient positioning. Respiratory therapy will
administer treatments and manage respiratory equipment; nurses are
primarily responsible for monitoring. A dedicated telemetry monitor
technician is available to support nurses, who are not expected to
interpret telemetry strips. Shifts are scheduled from 7 AM to 7 PM
for nurses and from 6 AM to 6 PM for patient care techs. No
self-scheduling or block scheduling is permitted; scheduling is
managed by the nursing manager. Traveling staff are expected to be
flexible and assist with filling in gaps in the schedule. Every
other weekend work is required for this position. Holiday rotations
may apply. There is no on-call or standby requirement. Floating may
occur to any other medical surgical or intermediate care units for
lower acuity patients. Scrub colors are navy blue for registered
nurses and ceil blue for patient care techs. Training consists of
one day with an educator or on the computer system, followed by one
day with a preceptor. Cancellation policy allows the client to
cancel two shifts during a 13-week assignment. The charting system
