Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse in a Medical
Surgical unit. The unit has 48 beds. Nurse-to-Patient Ratios are
1:5-7 on days and 1:6-8 on nights. Common diagnoses include
pneumonia, urinary tract infections, altered mental status,
gastrointestinal bleeding, alcohol withdrawal, and falls/weakness.
RNs are required to titrate drips, with some exceptions. Common
titratable and set rate drips include heparin, bumetanide, and
furosemide. There are charge nurses on each shift, with two on day
shifts who will have a patient assignment. At night, if there is
only one charge nurse, they do not take a patient assignment. There
are nurse aides or patient care technicians on this unit, with an
average ratio of 1 aide to 10-12 patients. Aides are responsible
for taking vitals, performing blood glucose monitoring, EKGs,
applying heart monitors, assisting with bathing, feeding,
toileting, and turning and positioning patients. Respiratory
therapy will administer breathing treatments, inhalers, and manage
respiratory equipment such as BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow oxygen.
Registered Nurses typically monitor respiratory equipment but are
not required to perform checks. Monitor technicians are present and
read and monitor telemetry, alerting nurses to any issues. Nurses
are not expected to read and interpret telemetry strips. Shifts are
from 7 AM to 7 PM for nurses and 6 AM to 6 PM for aides. There is
no self-scheduling or block scheduling; the manager creates the
schedule. Traveling nurses must be flexible and assist in filling
gaps in the regular schedule. Travelers are required to work every
other weekend and may be asked to participate in holiday rotation.
There is no call or standby requirement for this role. The role may
involve floating to other medical surgical units or intermediate
care for lower acuity patients. The required scrubs for Registered
Nurses are navy blue. The dress code also specifies ceil blue for
patient care technicians. There will be one day designated for
unit-specific orientation with an educator and one day with a
preceptor. 5 Benefits of Travel Nursing A diverse portfolio of
